DEBORAH McGRATH

Scholar Support Coordinator

Deborah is the Student Support Coordinator for the Group 5 Bridge2Rwanda Scholars. She provides support to the scholars during their transition to the U.S., and throughout their college experience. Deborah’s role is to be in regular communication with all of the scholars and to provide support and guidance regarding their day to day life and any academic, social, cultural, emotional or financial concerns that they experience. She also maintains an ongoing relationship with Group 5 host families, starting with their initial introduction to Bridge2Rwanda and continuing with as needed support and counsel as they navigate the very important role as host parents. Deb earned a B.A.in Psychology from the University of Dayton, and an M.S. in Counseling Psychology from George Williams College. Prior to working with Bridge2Rwanda, Deb had extensive experience working with families and gifted students. As a clinical school counselor at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy for 23 years, she provided supportive counseling, short term therapy and crisis intervention to gifted students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds in a residential secondary school. Deb lives in Batavia, Illinois and is the mother of two sons. She has two grandchildren that keep her busy traveling to Portland, Oregon for frequent visits.

Best advice I ever got was from my mother who would say “ everything turns out for the best” and to say to myself “ we”ll see…” 

FAVORITE BOOK, MOVIE, OR PIECE OF ART ?

Book: It is so hard to pick just one, but I love JR Tolkien – the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy . 

Movie: “To Kill a Mockingbird” – I love the character Atticus Finch!

Art: “Luncheon of the Rowing Party” by Renoir.  My real favorite is a painting I own. I bought it in Kigali at Inema Arts called “Happy People” by Sam Kamari.
