Rwanda Experience

Urwego Opportunity Bank (UOB) (www.uob.rw) – UOB is Rwanda’s largest microfinance bank. From 2004-2007, Bridge2Rwanda board members, Dale Dawson, Bishop John Rucyahana and Dabbs Cavin worked with Opportunity International to launch a new bank in Rwanda and to affect a merger with Urwego Community Bank, an existing Rwandan microfinance institution owned by World Relief and Hope International. Dabbs served as UOB’s first CEO, and Dale and Bishop John currently serve on UOB’s board of directors.

Rwanda Trading Company (RTC) (www.rwandatrading.com) – Bridge2Rwanda board member, Scott Ford, launched RTC in 2009 to purchase, mill and export coffee in Rwanda. RTC purchased an established coffee mill facility in Kigali and has quickly become one of Rwanda’s largest coffee exporters. Matt Smith, Bridge2Rwanda’s former business manager, assisted with the formation of RTC and then became its operations director in Rwanda.

Ikiraro Investments (Ikiraro) – Tom Phillips of Memphis TN established Ikiraro in 2009 to serve as an investment holding company to build operating businesses in Rwanda. In 2010, Ikiraro Farms launched a poultry business in Musanze to produce as many as 7,000 chicken eggs a day. Tyson Foods, one of the world’s largest processors and marketers of chicken, beef and pork products, has served as Ikiraro’s technical advisor on the poultry business. Ikiraro has also partnered with Dr. Caleb King to develop mini-hydro power projects in Rwanda’s Northern Province. Bridge2Rwanda facilitated the organization of Ikiraro and continues to support its activities.
